Disinflation: The February Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 0.4% month over month and 3.2% year over year, slightly above the expected 3.1%. The core CPI reading, excluding volatile food and energy prices, was 3.8%, above the Federal Reserve's 2% target. The CPI sub-index for shelter and the index for gasoline, which account for over 60% of the overall CPI's monthly increase, also rose. The Federal Reserve is unlikely to cut rates before the latter part of the year. The shelter index has increased by 5.7% over the past year, impacting housing affordability and mortgage rates. Energy prices, however, have decreased over the year. (Axios)

Rate Cut: Despite that, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has stated that the US central bank is close to having the confidence to begin cutting interest rates, due to falling inflation. Powell believes that the current monetary policy is in the right place and that the bank is waiting to be more confident that inflation is sustainably moving down to 2%. The most recent data showed headline inflation at 2.4%, with underlying inflation at 2.8%, both of which have been decreasing since mid-last year. Investors are expecting an initial Fed rate cut in June, with the current policy rate of interest held at a more than 20-year high of between 5.25% and 5.5%. The central bank will meet next on March 19-20. (Reuters)
