Proptech examples include home search portals like Zillow and Redfin, property management platforms like AppFolio and Buildium, e-signature and closing tools, smart lock and access systems, construction management software like Procore, and commercial leasing and building operations platforms. Each applies technology to a specific real estate job.
Home search portals such as Zillow, Realtor.com, and Redfin changed how buyers start their search by putting listings, photos, and estimates online. Agent tools include CRMs, showing schedulers, and transaction management systems that track documents from offer to close. Digital closing platforms let parties sign and notarize documents remotely where state law allows.
Property management software like AppFolio, Buildium, Yardi, and Entrata handles rent collection, accounting, maintenance requests, and leasing for landlords and managers. Tenant screening services check credit and background. Resident apps let renters pay rent, book amenities, and submit work orders from their phone.
Commercial proptech includes listing and data platforms such as CoStar, leasing and deal management tools, building operations software for engineers, and tenant experience apps for offices. Data analytics firms help investors analyze markets, rents, and comparable sales.
Procore is a common example in construction management, coordinating documents, schedules, and field teams. Other tools estimate costs, capture site progress with drones or 360 photos, or model buildings digitally before they are built.
Digital mortgage platforms let borrowers apply online and upload documents. Title and escrow technology speeds up searches and payments. Automated valuation models estimate property values quickly for lenders and consumers, though they work best alongside human judgment.
Vacation rental hosts rely on their own set of proptech: channel managers that sync calendars across booking sites, dynamic pricing tools that adjust nightly rates based on demand, automated guest messaging, and cleaning schedulers that coordinate turnovers between stays.
Each one takes a slow, manual, or paper-heavy step in real estate and makes it faster, cheaper, or more transparent. That is the practical definition of proptech: technology applied to a real job in the property lifecycle, whether that is finding a home, managing a building, or closing a loan.
Examples are useful, but the real question for a buyer is fit. Start with the job you need done and the hours or dollars it costs today. Ask vendors how they measure results with customers like you, which systems they integrate with, how data moves in and out, and what onboarding looks like. A short pilot with clear success criteria is often the safest way to test a new tool before rolling it out across a portfolio.
Also check data ownership and security terms. Real estate tools often hold personal and financial information about residents and owners.
Is a real estate website proptech? A simple brokerage website usually is not. A platform with search, data, and tools often is.
What is the biggest proptech category? Definitions vary, but property management and transaction software are among the most widely used.
